How to Feel Like a Local After Buying Nosara Real Estate

Buying Nosara real estate from Wanderlust Sotheby's International Realty is just the beginning of your journey to living Pura Vida. In this gorgeous area of Costa Rica, you'll find a tight-knit community eager to welcome newcomers. But fitting into a new place can be hard, even with one as supportive as ours. Whether you're an ex-pat ready to live out your ideal life abroad or you just bought a vacation home to get away from time to time, we can help you adjust to the lifestyle of Nosara.

Just follow our advice and you'll feel like a local in no time.

Introduce Yourself

Nosara is a friendly place and we like getting to know each other! You’ll find that most people here are very friendly and social. Don't be surprised when strangers smile and wave or strike up a conversation. If you're new to the area, don't be afraid to introduce yourself when this happens. Once people get to know you, it won't be long until everyone feels like an old friend. In Nosara, it's easy to find yourself staying in the more tourist areas of Guiones and Pelada, but we encourage you to explore the more local parts of town. There is so much more authenticity if you are willing to take a short 10-15 minute drive into the areas such as Nosara Central, Playa Ostional, and Playa Garza. Here you will experience a true taste of Costa Rican culture that you can't find in Guiones or Pelada.

Pick Up a New Hobby

After buying Nosara real estate, take some time to try out some new activities. This is a surfer's paradise, so grab a board and catch some waves with a few lessons! If hanging ten isn't your style, that's okay. There are tons of other adventures to have in this community. For instance, you can make some fishing buddies with a charter or experience the ocean in a different way with an afternoon of snorkeling.

If you are looking for some land-based activities, then the area’s sprawling mountains, pastures, and backroads are full of adventures waiting to be had. The province that Nosara is located in, Guanacaste, is known as Costa Rica’s “cattle country”. This means that a family horseback tour is the perfect way to experience a whole new side of Nosara. If you are looking for something a little more laid back, then you can see the same sights from the convenience of an ATV. It’s also a good idea to sign up for Spanish lessons where you can meet new people and learn the local language.

Of course, any Nosara hobby list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Yoga. Nosara is world famous for its many yoga retreats. With an endless array of different classes, styles, and settings you can be sure to find the perfect practice for you. Most of the yoga retreats also offer many wellness based activities and classes. One can find options for palates, spin classes, mixed martial arts, sound healing, breath work, and so much more. Nosara is all about health and wellness so you will never run out of options when it comes to taking care of yourself in your own unique ways.

Get Involved with a Non-Profit

For many people, a big part of living in Nosara is giving back. Our community is beautiful and strong because we work hard to keep it that way. Whenever you purchase real estate in Nosara, you will become part of something bigger than yourself. There's no better way to appreciate everything we love about this place than by volunteering with one of the many local non-profits. Here are some of our local favorites:

  • Nosara Civic Association. This group focuses on conservation, sustainability, and activism to help all living things in Nosara thrive.

  • Wildlife Conservation Association. The WCA believes in achieving a sustainable future through research, outreach, and education.

  • Bomberos of Nosara. One of the best parts of Nosara is its seclusion, but not in every way. These volunteer firefighters rush to our community's aid immediately when homes and lives are at risk.

There's something magical about Nosara and it's our responsibility to keep it that way. There are plenty of non-profits to work with, so don't be afraid to get involved and work with your new neighbors!

Lean into Our Way of Life

It's a busy world beyond our shores, but here in Nosara, we like to slow down and take our time. You'll find that Costa Rican locals like to do things at their pace. Owning a home in this community lets you get away from all your other worries and relax, and locals know how to balance responsibilities with their own self-care. Nosara certainly has its own way of teaching you patience and how to be appreciative for what you have.

Embrace the Other Locals – Wildlife!

We share our little slice of the world with some of the best locals around – the wonderful creatures of Costa Rica. The jungle shelters many critters who made Nosara their home long before us, so we are careful to respect and appreciate them. Though at first, it can be jarring coming face-to-face with monkeys or finding a scorpion hiding out in your shoes, you'll soon get used to these little meetings and find ways to live with them. It’s just another part of buying Nosara real estate and joining our close-knit community.

Taking a nature tour or volunteering at one of Nosara's wildlife sanctuaries is a great way to become familiar with the animals. As for bugs, don't leave lights on at night, and make sure every entry point without a screen is tightly shut to keep out the insects. Here are some other ways to deal with the bugs and other wildlife.
